Powerful winter gusts caused walls to collapse upon fragile shelters housing Palestinians displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least four people. This tragedy underscores the perilous living conditions that persist after more than two years of devastating bombardment and critical shortages of aid.

Ceasefire Provides No Respite from Severe Elements

While a ceasefire has been active from last fall, humanitarian organizations state that residents do not have the sufficient shelter required to withstand recurring cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which took in the bodies, reported on this week that the deceased were two women, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry stated on the same day that a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia during the night.

"The world has enabled us to witness death in every possible way," said a family member after the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 people of a single household — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than five others were hurt in the incident.

Family members on that day began clearing the rubble that had buried their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were distributing shelter kits, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as food and hygiene supplies across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of Palestinians reside in improvised tents since their homes were turned into rubble during the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations say not enough building supplies are reaching Gaza under the truce.

Casualty Numbers Since the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the administration, says over four hundred and forty individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies taken to hospitals after the truce began. The ministry maintains comprehensive casualty data that are considered largely accurate by UN agencies and independent experts.

James Elder, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on that day that no fewer than one hundred minors under the age of 18 – 60 boys and forty females – had been lost their lives after the truce started due to military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, artillery fire and use of bullets. Those figures, he explained, reflected cases where enough details had been gathered to justify documentation, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He added that hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"Although 'explosions and shootings have slowed' during the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed reporters at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from the Strip. "Therefore what the international community now terms calm would be viewed as a crisis in any other place," he said.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than two million individuals has been struggling to keep the cold weather and bad weather at bay while facing lack of assistance and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is badly required throughout the colder season. This marks the third winter since the war between the state and the group began on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and killed around twelve hundred individuals and abducted two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.
