What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
No fewer than 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.
The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the individuals who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the events leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
