Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Has the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why not reference the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
