The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
