Educator Slain and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a female high school in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, according to a statement.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.
Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.
Area inhabitants told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.
In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.
The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.
Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in recent months, with learning centers experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
