Condemnation Erupts as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Backlash
Figures from across the political spectrum and the Hollywood industry are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Post
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
“What a disgusting and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the remarks. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some GOP elected officials also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and mental health some families face.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his political party to justify the statements.
The Director's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of a different political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
