Amateur players are being offered the chance to win one million Australian dollars when they take on elite players - featuring leading player the Spanish champion - in a winner-takes-all point leading up to the year's first major

Tournament officials of the year's first Grand Slam have revealed the $1 Million Single-Point Tournament, which will pit 10 amateur players against top-ranked players in a single-elimination format at the tournament grounds

Players will play 'rock, paper, scissors' to determine who takes the serve or return position, and whoever wins the point will advance to the following stage

The champion of the event will receive approximately half a million pounds

Contextually, players who made it to the semi-finals of the men's or women's singles in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

Planners have not detailed exactly how the event will work, but it is projected to mirror a similar format to this year's edition

The elite players will be granted to make one service and the non-professionals on two occasions - as is the norm in conventional tennis

While it is not certain how the pairings will work, there will be multiple elimination stages and the venue will be the main stadium rather than the smaller Kia Arena

The last matches will occur in a night session instead of 1pm local time

Participation Details

Local players - or overseas competitors who have enrolled with the national federation - can compete in 'single-point competition' events at their community centers

The winners of the local competitions will then go into a draw, with an everyday competitor from every state and territory picked to take part in the 'final competition' in a evening match on Wednesday, 14 January

There will also be a entry tournament in the final month which non-professionals, developing professionals, celebrities and sport stars can participate in

It begins on Monday, 12 January and the two winners will advance to Wednesday's 'championship match' with the remaining non-professionals and 10 professionals
