As Sunbathers Ran From Danger, Widely-Shared Image Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, has always considered the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected loud noises echoing across the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the road, talking to a duo who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she became aware of someone coming up at her rear. The person was a lifeguard, dashing to Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. It was just him heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that sizeable pack and unshod … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every part of you would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

A Symbol of Courage During Chaos

The photograph that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous instances of heroism in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics caring for many those hurt.

Local Reaction and Support

Doolan’s account was just one of many to come out of the community, with the patrol base beside the location of the attack serving as a temporary treatment center. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen taking action, for instance entering the water to assist people who were struggling.

After the attack, messages of gratitude flooded in. One post conveyed appreciation for the responders who exhibited that “kindness will always conquer evil”.

The squad of beach patrol published a statement, explaining they were “processing what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive words and support. We are overwhelmed by the kindness directed at our personnel,” the group commented. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the hope that it supports those involved.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many full-time lifeguards, said that the team rose to the occasion from the second the violence commenced right into late that evening.

“People have shared so many emotional narratives, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” commented a local official.

“These individuals show altruism every day in keeping our internationally renowned beaches secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that evening should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is important that we consider just how much positivity we have seen in the presence of such darkness.”
