Arsenal's Disputed Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Will Conclude Next Year

Arsenal Football Club has declared that its disputed sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will expire in June this upcoming year.

Background and Scrutiny

The arrangement, reportedly valued at around ÂŁ10m per year, was first established and has since come under fire.

Such scrutiny arises from the country's reported backing for the M23 forces in ongoing conflicts in the eastern areas of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In February, Arsenal was accused of committing a disrespectful act to the authorities in Congo by not arranging a meeting with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to discuss the partnership.

Partnership Structure and Objectives

Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the the country's development agency, which is a state institution.

Many speculate that Arsenal signed and upheld this partnership primarily to expand their African supporter base.

However, the deal has now ended after both parties “collectively determined” to end their collaboration.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the initial objectives of the partnership – advocating preservation and sustainable tourism, encouraging numerous followers to visit the nation, and creating a lasting foundation for tourism growth,” declared an Gunners' release.

The release further noted that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's ambition to become an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and stage additional international competitions while executing grassroots football initiatives that have assisted numerous youth athletes and coaches develop their skills and encourage more involvement in sports throughout the nation.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, characterized the deal as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “advancing” the club's ambitions.

However, this perspective was not shared by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the activist organization Arsenal Peace Advocates demonstrating outside the club's home ground during the initial Champions League semi-final match against the French club in the end of April.

Activists unveiled a placard declaring “Drop Visit Rwanda” and provided wristbands to cover up the partnership emblem on kits.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

In the same month, Paris Saint-Germain continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

At the same time, the Madrid-based team inked a recent contract for the same period that has caused the branding featured on the La Liga side's men's and women's shirts.
