Anthony Barry Shares The Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
Ten years back, Barry competed in League Two. Currently, he's dedicated supporting the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His path from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, âIt was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 ⊠flat balls, not enough bibs,â and he fell in love with it. He discovered his purpose.
Rapid Rise
His advancement has been remarkable. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he built a reputation with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career led him to elite sides, while also serving in roles with national teams across multiple countries. His players include big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the âpinnacleâ as he describes it.
âAll begins with a vision ⊠But Iâm a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You dream big but then you bring it down: âWhat's the process, each day, each phase?â Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams wonât get it done. We have to build a structured plan that allows us for optimal success.â
Obsession with Details
Dedication, particularly on fine points, defines Barryâs story. Working every hour all the time, they both challenge limits. The approach feature player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. He stresses âTeam Englandâ and dislikes phrases including "pause".
âThis isn't a vacation or a pause,â Barry notes. âWe needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.â
Greedy Coaches
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as highly ambitious. âWe aim to control every aspect of the game,â he states. âWe strive to own every metre of the pitch and that's our focus many of our days on. We must not just to keep up of changes and to lead and set new standards. Itâs a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to clarify complicated matters.
âWe have 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We have to play an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. Itâs to take it from idea to information to understanding to action.
âTo develop a process that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use all the time available from when we started. In the time we donât have the players, we need to foster connections with each player. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, observing them live, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.â
World Cup Qualifiers
The coach is focusing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers â against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. The team has secured qualification with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. This period to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.
âThomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach should represent the best aspects from the top division,â he comments. âThe physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the integrity. The England jersey must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.
âFor it to feel easy, we need to provide an approach that enables them to move and run like they do every week, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and focus more on action.
âThere are morale boosts you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch â building from the defense, attacking high up. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data these days. They understand tactics â defensive shapes. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.â
Passion for Progress
His desire for improvement knows no bounds. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried over the speaking requirement, especially as his class included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. For self-improvement, he went into the most challenging environments available to him to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.
Barry graduated with top honors, and his dissertation â focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins â became a published work. Frank was one of those impressed and he brought Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it was telling that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.
The next manager at Stamford Bridge took over, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he recruited Barry away from London to work together again. English football's governing body view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
