A large-scale search and rescue effort is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of lost boats loaded with humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Military Rescue Operations Initiated

Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were transporting at least nine crew members, according to a navy statement.

The boats had been expected to arrive in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their arrival, authorities reported.

Context of Humanitarian Support to the Island

The Caribbean nation has leaned on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the country endures widespread power outages across the country.

"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and each boat are equipped with proper safety equipment and communication devices," an official involved in the effort commented.

The nine-person crew are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Recent Relief Mission

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and warmly received another boat that had carried a significant amount of relief supplies to the island.

That vessel, called "Granma 2.0" after the boat in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and foodstuffs.

Broader Political Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of efforts to ship essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" shortages of supplies, with over 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba because of power shortages.

Foreign policy measures have increased in recent months, with remarks from different officials underscoring the delicate state of diplomatic ties.

Reacting to previous comments, a senior government figure declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that early stages of discussions were initiated, although their current progress remains unclear.

The naval forces said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to locate the boats and secure the security of the sailors.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
